The Bedford Blues Foundation is the rugby club's way of reaching out to their local community via a range of outreach projects and initiatives, with the aim of supporting grassroots development through a variety of rugby and non-rugby-based games.
The pandemic meant that all sport was forced to stop, meaning that a large source of income for the rugby club had stopped with no clear indication on when it would resume. With the Foundation being a new feature of Bedford Blues Rugby Club, it was uncertain whether the organisation would launch at all due to the pandemic.
The Tackling Inequalities Fund has allowed Bedford Blues to kickstart their mission of empowering the local community to use sport in influencing positive lifestyle choices during the difficult lockdown period. The Foundation have also made crucial partnerships in the local area and have worked very closely with a local housing association to provide physical activity opportunities for those with personal issues, such as addiction.
Many of the participants have had no access to physical activity opportunities before and the Tackling Inequalities Fund made it possible for Bedford Blues Foundation to provide vulnerable people a safe environment in which they can take part in physical activity and enjoy a meal.
